Government Funding

Student Aid Alberta

Student Aid Alberta combines federal Canada Student Loans and provincial Alberta Student Loans into a single application. BrightlyEd is a designated institution, meaning students are eligible for full government loan funding.

Eligibility Basics

Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Enrolled at least 60% full-time (minimum 9 credits). Demonstrated financial need based on income assessment. Alberta resident (lived in AB for 12+ months).

Application Timeline

Apply at least 6–8 weeks before your semester start date. For Fall 2025, the recommended deadline is July 1, 2025. Late applications are accepted but funding may be delayed.

How to Apply

Create a MyAlberta Account

Visit Alberta.ca/studentaid and create or log in to your MyAlberta Digital ID account.

Complete the Application

Enter your program details (institution: BrightlyEd, code AB-0441), enrollment status, and income information. Takes 30–45 minutes.

Receive Assessment

You'll receive a Notice of Assessment within 4–6 weeks. This confirms how much loan and grant funding you'll receive.

Submit to BrightlyEd Finance

Email a copy of your NOA to finance@brightlyed.ca to defer your tuition due date pending disbursement.

Funds Disbursed

Funds are disbursed directly to BrightlyEd for tuition, with remaining funds deposited to your bank account within 5 business days of semester start.

Scholarship Application Process

Submit all scholarship applications through the Student Portal under "Financial Aid β†’ Scholarships & Bursaries." Attach required documents (transcripts, essay, reference letters as specified). Applications reviewed by the Awards Committee β€” decisions are final.

Missed Payment Policy

A $35 late fee is charged for missed installments. If two consecutive payments are missed, the full remaining balance becomes due immediately and course access may be suspended.

How to Set Up a Payment Plan

Log In to Student Portal

Navigate to Finance β†’ Payment Plans. Available once you've accepted your offer.

Select Your Plan

Choose 2, 3 or 4 installments. First payment is due at enrollment to activate the plan.

Set Up Pre-Authorized Debit

Enter your bank account details. Payments are withdrawn automatically on the scheduled dates.

Receive Confirmation

You'll receive an email with your installment schedule. All T2202 receipts are generated at year end.

Tax Information

T2202 Tuition Tax Receipts

The T2202 (Tuition and Enrolment Certificate) allows you to claim eligible tuition fees paid to BrightlyEd for income tax purposes. It also documents the months you were enrolled full-time or part-time for the Education Amount.

When T2202s Are Issued

T2202 receipts are issued annually by February 28 for the prior tax year. They are available in the Student Portal under Finance β†’ Tax Receipts. No paper copies are mailed.

Unused Tuition Credits

If you can't use all your tuition credits in the current tax year, you can carry them forward to future years or transfer up to $5,000 to a parent, grandparent, or spouse. Consult a tax advisor for your specific situation.

T2202 FAQ

What fees are eligible on the T2202?
Tuition fees over $100 per semester. Student activity fees, parking, and materials are not eligible. The student union fee and technology fee are partially eligible.
My T2202 shows the wrong SIN. What do I do?
Contact the Finance Office immediately at finance@brightlyed.ca. Provide your student ID and correct SIN. Corrections are processed within 5 business days.
I withdrew from my program. Will I still receive a T2202?
Yes, if you paid tuition of $100 or more, a T2202 will be issued for the fees paid, regardless of whether you completed the semester.
Can I transfer my tuition credits to a parent?
Yes, up to $5,000 of unused current-year credits can be transferred. Complete Schedule 11 (student) and Schedule 2 (the receiving person) when filing taxes.
